A vasectomy is a safe and very common procedure which provides the most reliable form for male contraception. This is an office based procedure that is done under local anesthesia and involves disrupting the flow of sperm to render a man infertile. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes.

This procedure involves placing a small ultrasound probe into the rectum to image the prostate and accurately measure its size. At the same time, if indicated, the ultrasound device is used to guide the sampling of the prostate during a prostate biopsy, which is done with local anesthesia.
