Cystocele is also known as a "dropped" or "fallen" bladder. This occurs when a women's vaginal weakens and allows the normal support of the bladder to fail. This condition is most often associated with previous child birth and the hormonal changes following menopause. Patient's with a cystocoele may first notice symptoms of vaginal pressure and may see a protrusion of tissue from the vaginal opening. It is not uncommon for women with a cystocele to also experience leakage of urine with coughing (aka "stress incontinence") and/or bladder frequency and urgency. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the cystocele and include vaginal estrogen replacement, placement of a pessary, or surgical correction.
